The first-aid requirement

In Vermont, the Department for Children and Families (DCF) requires current first-aid and pediatric CPR certification before a foster license is issued, and it must be kept current throughout the licensing period. The training prepares carers to respond to common emergencies — injuries, choking, cardiac arrest — and is obtained from a recognized provider.

This requirement is recognized by DCF Family Services under its foster-home licensing regulations and its kinship, foster and pre-adoptive parent training policy. The certificate is one requirement in addition to the home study and evaluation of parenting suitability, and must be renewed to remain valid.

How to meet it

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
